Brookes (Revisited)
What: Quilt Patch Design for Brookes (Revisited), a permanent Installation at the National Maritime Museum (NMM).
Why: This strategic design piece serves as a narrative bridge between the historical trauma of the British slave ship Brookes and a contemporary audience's search for connection.
How: By applying Elgin Cleckley’s "_mpathic design" methodology, the quilt patch transforms moments of visitor hesitation into opportunities for engagement and reflection.

Creative Strategy: The patch design traces the journey of one of Brookes’ voyages on a map of the transatlantic slave trade, with countries shaped like fingerprints—symbolizing both the “point” in the visitor’s question and the permanent impact of slave owners’ actions on history. A QR code at the bottom links to detailed voyage information on slavevoyages.org, allowing visitors to explore the historical narrative and its continuing relevance today.
The Challenge: When faced with a tragedy as massive as the Middle Passage, many museum visitors feel a sense of "emotional distance" or ask, "What’s the point?" of revisiting and reimagining these histories.
The Goal: Invite audiences to explore the human stories behind the transatlantic slave trade while fostering empathy and historical understanding.

This quilt patch project taught me how to design beyond aesthetics, creating work that is emotionally resonant and impactful. By centering visitor empathy and historical narrative, I learned how visual language and interactive elements can connect audiences to complex histories. The experience strengthened my ability to craft designs that communicate both story and feeling, making the work not only seen but deeply felt.
